Emily’s Work Experience

07th December 2015

During her half term holiday, we have been lucky enough to be joined by Emily, a sixth form student wanting to gain some experience of agency life. Emily has managed to fit us in as part of her extremely busy schedule; not only is she a full-time A-level student but she manages to hold down three jobs as well!

“I have just started my final year at sixth form and it’s time to start making decisions about university – where I want to go and what I want to study. After studying Marketing as part of my A-Level Business Studies course, I quickly realised that it was something that I really enjoyed and felt it may be something that I might want to pursue. However, I had no idea of what it would actually be like to work in an agency. After meeting and speaking to Moray at a business networking lunch, he kindly offered me work experience at Monitor, where I have been lucky enough to spend the past week.

During my time here, I have been mentored by Account Manager Jenni and she has really taught me a lot over the course of my work experience. On the first day, after speaking to both Jenni and Moray, we decided it would be best for me to have my own small project to work on based on one of their live clients; this allowed me to get hands on with a number of projects and has given me a real insight for the industry. From desk research to copywriting, proof reading to creating e- newsletters and working on social media projects, this week has certainly offered variety!

I was also given the opportunity to work on the design side of things – creating mood boards of image ideas that could possibly be used for the front cover and through the next issue of a digital magazine they produce.

Throughout the week, I have had the opportunity to be involved in many aspects’ of Monitor’s work. I sat in on conference calls and production meetings – which really allowed me to see how Monitor work as a company, I even attended a meeting with Jenni and Moray with a client which gave me a real insight into how they work with their clients and the strong relationships that they strive to build.

Although I have only spent a week at Monitor, I have gained a great deal of invaluable experience and learnt a lot about the marketing world. Working here has made me even more determined to study Marketing at university and given me a really clear idea of what it is like to work within an agency. Thank you to all the team at Monitor!”
